I remember the years I spent separating and then getting my divorce.  It was one of the most trying times of my life.  Not only was I fighting against tradition, antiquated beliefs, and my preconceived notions of marriage, I was also fighting a legal battle, sexism, and the lack of adequate legal support.  I remember being overwhelmed with the process and wanting to give up, to run away, and thoughts of whether I’d done the right thing by ending the marriage.  It was just that difficult. But God!

I gained a team of supporters during this two-year process.  They didn’t realize they were part of a group of individuals keeping me going, but they were.  They’d speak words of strength into my life at just the right time when I needed it most.  I remember being called and told I was late for court, something I didn’t have on my schedule.  I called this one individual, and she told me, as I frantically told her my dilemma, she said to me in an oh so assertive voice, “You can do this Sandra!”, “You’re strong!”.  Those words were like the strong arms of God lifting me from the ground, standing me up, dusting me off, and gently but oh so purposefully moving me forward.  I believed I could do it, go to court, encounter his group of supporters, and meet with the judge to discuss the issues relating to my divorce.  My supporter, taking just a few minutes to speak those words into my life, was just what I needed to move forward with strength and determination.  That incident stays with me, in my heart forever.  It helps me look for opportunities to be a part of a team of supporters.  It is my goal to pay it forward and Be That Strength for Someone Else.

God will place angels in your life, throughout your life, to help you along your journey.  Trust him and know that he will.

“For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:11-12

  1. Often times all it takes is a kind word, a gentle smile, a shoulder to lean on or a listening ear. People want to be loved, understood, and appreciated. I believe those too are some basic needs. I love how you said you want to “Be that strength for someone else” for the Bible declares that after you have suffered awhile and have come through then we are to go back and strengthen our brethren.
Keep doing the work of the Lord, no matter what we call it…paying it forward, lending a helping hand, or just being a blessing. It’s all HIS doing!
Well said Sandra, I look forward to your next exhale!

    1. Yes Alicia, as you said it’s our duty to go back an help someone else. I mean if we were able to make it through the challenge, why would we waste what we’ve learned? What I learned is always be willing to help someone else. Thanks for your comments.

  2. So true Sandra. We all need each other as we travel along the way. No man is an island and we are our brothers/sisters keepers.
    Thank you for sharing.
