Throughout my life there have been times of poverty, lack, success, and fulfillment. God has allowed me the opportunity to experience different levels of economic conditions. I remember my siblings and I having the ability to attend private schools, a life of plenty, and a home in a wonderful community. I also remember and have written about experiencing poverty. As a result, I’ve been blessed to see finances from different perspectives, one from the eyes of poverty and one from the eyes of plenty.
Years ago, God placed an angel, a messenger, in my path who would constantly talk to me about my finances. He was a CPA at the company I worked for, that would come to my desk every day to talk to me about investing, primarily investing in our companies 401K. At the time I knew nothing about what he was talking about. I was totally lost and the information he shared was over my head. He knew it and treated that fact as a mission for him to win me over, to get me to invest into our companies 401K. After many months of his preaching to me about investing, I finally invested in the company 401K plan. I really did so to get him to quit talking about it. Not only did I invest but I made it a point to educate myself on the importance of investing, taking advantage of the company match program, and even educated myself on other ways to invest. I became a convert. That experience opened my mind to the importance of investing. It eventually launched my desire to invest outside of the company retirement plan. I became even more interested in the stock market and angel investing. I became knowledgeable of the benefit of looking past simply putting money in checking and savings accounts.
Growing up my family wasn’t educated in the area of finances or investing. It was God who sent his messenger to bless me with information and open my eyes. He put me on the road to financial literacy. While I’m still learning and still growing in that area, I owe it to my finance angel who provided information which ultimately allowed me the ability to care for my children and to set up a retirement for myself. I remember my grandmother would place money in her mattress or other secret locations. Well that day is over. There are options to saving money, investing money, and making money outside of one’s regular daily job. There are also many resources available which will help one begin to learn. One book I found very helpful is a book entitled Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. Information provided by Dave Ramsey also helped me get on track. That’s what worked for me. Consider researching and finding what works for you. Ask God to direct you and help you. If he did it for me, he will certainly do it for you.
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5 NASB2020
